BataDB owns workspace billing, entitlement, RBAC, and customer UX. Headband owns retrieval execution: indexing, per-index engine routing, search APIs, analytics, and usage signals. Initial packaging is per BataDB project with included indexed documents and monthly search operations.
Yes, you can upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time. Changes take effect immediately and billing is prorated for the remainder of your billing period.
Search and document-write limits are enforced before metered requests. If a request would exceed your plan, the API returns 429 with code usage_limit_exceeded. Usage checks fail open if billing lookup is unavailable.

Today you can Bring Your Own Engine: point indexes at your own Meilisearch, Typesense, or Elasticsearch cluster so the search index lives in your infrastructure. Headband still stores control-plane metadata, encrypted engine configs, hashed keys, usage, and analytics. Fully self-hosting the Headband control plane itself is on the way; the root app license is still being finalized.
